Women working in a mixed environment

Qn4: My wife persists in working in a school environment where there is free mixing. What do you advise her?

Ans.4: I advise this woman to listen to her husband and obey him because this is obligatory upon her as Allaah states in the Qur’aan {Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allâh has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allâh and to their husbands), and guard in the husband's absence what Allâh orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property, etc.)} Surah an-Nisaa:34. She shouldn’t go out of her house without her husband’s permission as the angels send curses upon the woman who goes out of her house without her husband’s permission until she returns. I advise the husband to deal with her in a good way and be patient with her.
As for the question about working or studying in a mixed environment, when it comes to studying in a mixed environment in America or in England, the matter differs from that in the land of the Muslims, because in the land of the Muslims, there is some shyness and good manners which acts as a protection, whereas in those countries there isn’t any shyness or protection. So, she should not go to these places. From the question I understand that the students are older students, then she shouldn’t do this, but if the students are very young such as kindergarden pupils, then it is ok but only as long as there is no mixing amongst the male and female teachers. But it is still more appropriate to have separate classes for boys and girls. If the children are 3-5 yrs old, then it’s ok to mix them but the teachers should be totally separate in their classrooms and staffrooms.
