Supplication of prayer in other than Arabic Language

Qn10: I am an American living in America and I wondered if the du’aa in Sajdah (prostration) has to be in Arabic and in any specific words or can I supplicate as I please in my own language knowing that I don’t speak any Arabic?

Ans.10: There is a principle in the Shari’ah and that is the saying of Allaah ‘Fear Allaah as much as you can’ and another saying of Allaah, ‘Allaah doesn’t burden a soul with more than it can bear’ and there is also a hadith in Saheeh Muslim where the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) mentions, ‘Do that which I have commanded you as much as you can and keep away from that which I have prohibited you from.’ So my advice to this brother is, ‘Oh brother, you should try to learn the Arabic language and you should learn enough Arabic that you can correct your supplications in Arabic, however if you cannot, then it is permissible for you to make du’aa (supplication) in other than Arabic language, but you should try to learn and go to the people who know how to recite the du’aa correctly and I warn you against saying the du’aa wrongly. And Allaah Knows Best.’
