Female gynaecology student taught by Male teacher

Qn50: I am in Holland and want to know what the ruling is regarding studying Gynaecology and Midwifery knowing that while I’m doing this I have to attend lessons given by a male teacher twice a week? The reason I am studying this is because the Muslims are in great need of a female Muslim doctor as we currently have non-Muslim male doctors working in this field. So what is your advice O Shaykh?

Ans.50: What is understood from your question is that you do not have female professors to teach you this field of medicine or any other type of medical studies. I understand from your question that you teacher will be a non-Muslim man. In reality, we are in need of female doctors to treat our women, whether in the field mentioned or any other specialty. If the situation is as you have mentioned it, and your country is in need of female specialist doctors so we can prevent our women from visiting non-Muslim male doctors, then I don’t see any problem in you studying this with the condition that you are not alone with your male teacher while you are studying but that instead you are in a group of other female students (even if they are non-Muslim). So there is no problem with you studying medicine with the intention to treat the Muslim women in the future but only if you study within a group of other women so that you are not alone with your male teacher.
