Accepting a marriage proposal from an epileptic sufferer
Qn18: There’s a young Salafi who’s suffering from epilepsy and has been seeking treatment so he hasn’t suffered any symptoms for the last two years. He has proposed to a sister for marriage. Should her family accept this proposal for their daughter?
Ans.18: In my opinion, the brother should verify with a doctor if he has been completely cured or not. If he has been cured from this condition, then he doesn’t have to tell the girl’s family. If he hasn’t been cured and needs the medecine to be stable, then he should inform the family so that they are clear about it and understand and accept his condition. He should try to obtain a report from the doctor about the details of his state, and about the treatment he is taking. He should find out if the treatment has any side-effects such as affecting his fertility so that if this is the case, he can inform the girl’s family for it is not permissible to hide such matter as it is considered cheating and the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘Whoever cheats is not of us.’ Allaah Knows Best.
